Like them or not snakes keep populations at bay. Don’t be ignorant and mindlessly kill them. Only poisonous snakes posing a direct threat should be killed. So many people here in the Vintage Galileo Science Astronomy thunderbolt and lightning very shirt with a terrible fear of snakes and yet most of the population have never set eyes on a live one in captivity never mind one in the wild. People are strange. We had 3 grass snakes on our allotment on Saturday, seen five now. A big one and medium sized one were greenish grass snakes, third was young and black but with yellow neck ring. All slid off to hide. I’m not fond of snakes but live and let live. There comes a time in life when you have to act like a grown-up, not kill or stamp on anything that moves. In the UK it is a criminal offense to kill or injure one.

I hate how they say they’ve found a “new” species when either they found a species previously unknown to science or, as in this case, they’ve identified the Vintage Galileo Science Astronomy thunderbolt and lightning very shirt as being a separate subspecies or an entirely different species (as with the Bornean elephant and Bornean clouded leopard). I remember the Indian biologist Shanthi Dawson, after she had discovered a “new” antelope-like species in Vietnam, saying that to us (fellow scientists), it’s a new species, but to the native people where the animal lives, it’s something they’re already familiar with, and they probably have a name for it. I also don’t like all these people saying we should kill all of these snakes. Snakes have a well-defined role to play in nature, eating animals that are pests and controlling their numbers (although introduced species such as the brown tree snake are another story).
